Drywall Texturing

Drywall texture designs can be organized into two classifications based upon their technique of application. Textures that are used manually using standard hand tools are described as hand textures. Drywall textures that are pumped through a machine are described as spray textures. There are so many types of hand drywall textures that it is difficult to list them all.  Some hand textures are used with a pan and knife or a hawk and trowel. Some drywall textures make usage of unique brushes to stomp or swirl patterns in the mud. Sometimes drywall mud is topped on the entire surface using a paint roller or high-powered paint sprayer.

Spray textures are developed using machines with effective pumps that feed drywall mud through long hoses utilizing specialized nozzles that develop various kinds of texture. These types of texture are thought about as spray textures due to the fact that the design of texture is identified by the sprayer, rather than hand tools.  Drywall texture sprayers generally include a hopper which holds texture product, a powerful pump to move the product, an air compressor to blend air with the product, pipes, and specialized nozzle.

The internal combustion engines on larger texture rigs are capable of pumping more material over greater ranges which permits more uniform drywall textures. Texture mud is pumped through a long hose pipe to a gun operated by hand triggers. The texture weapon blends texture product with compressed air right before it is sprayed onto the drywall surface.  Smooth walls are a popular option for completing drywall walls and ceilings. Smooth walls usually require a level 5 surface. These types of specific textures are better suited for walls than ceilings.

Our teams work in tandem on both hand applied mud textures and those applied with a sprayer. This allows them to apply the mud and create the pattern while the mud is still wet.

Some of the different types of hand texturing include:

  • Skip Trowel
  • Rosebud Stomp
  • Hawk and Trowel
  • Santa-Fe Texture
  • Swirl
  • Slap Brush Texture
  • Comb
  • Sand Swirl

Some types of sprayer applied drywall textures include:

  • Popcorn
  • Splatter Knockdown
  • Orange Peel
